TERZOPIANO ARTE CONTEMPORANEA presents STILL LIFE

Lori Lako and Adrian Paci

Curated by Alessandra Poggianti

Opening 2nd March 2019

STILL LIFE brings together two independent research projects in a single exhibition: an
intergenerational dialogue characterized by a common creative sensibility and artistic
process that subtly references 17th century still life paintings. Flowers and plants are
transformed from living elements to fixed signs; drawing on their vitality, the artists have
created a space marked by tension between the natural and the artificial, representation and
reality, experience, and language, as well as domesticity and domestication, personal and
collective memory, and finally, between the image and the world itself.
Both originally from Albania, though of different generations, the two artists currently live
and work in Italy. During their stay in Lucca, they were in dialogue with one another as they
developed their own independent research projects.

Adrian Paci designed an iron and fabric structure within the space that functions as a studio
and a place for the close and contemplative observation of different species of plants. Over the
course of the residency, the artist entered into a slow, intimate dialogue with this collection of
different plant samples sourced from various nurseries of the country, and from this
produced a series of drawings. Daily, in a methodical manner, Paci worked on depicting the
variety of the selected plants; each drawing punctuates a working process that attaches great
significance to the meeting between vegetal and human elements. The results of this
performative act were presented to the public at the end of the residency.

Lori Lako worked with a series of photographs taken in the 1990s in a photographic studio in
her hometown in Albania. The different groups of people depicted are all presented in front of
the same exotic backdrop. A distance opens up between the landscape—representing tropical
heat—and the human element—representing continental cold—which the artist overcomes
and mends through photographic collage. Lako eliminated the human element from each
photograph, cutting out the different figures from their environment and reconstructing the
landscape anew. The result is “Exotic Memories,” a new backdrop made up of a multitude of
photographic fragments, where memories of the past are absorbed into the present in a
continuously developing identity.

Exhibition: March 3rd – April 14th, 2019
